Dr. Wade Banker Essay Scholarship

For Undergraduate Pre Medical Students – Open Now

Becoming a physician requires more than excellent grades and MCAT scores. It demands resilience, a service‑first heart, and the willingness to push through hard things – whether that’s a wrestling match, a rural farm chore before sunrise, or a complex medical procedure that could save a life.

Scholarship Overview

The Dr. Wade Banker Scholarship for Medical Students awards $1,000 to one exceptional undergraduate student who is actively preparing for a career in medicine. Unlike merit based scholarships that focus solely on grades or test scores, this award celebrates resilience, service mindedness, and the kind of quiet determination that Dr. Banker himself displayed – from a small Ohio River farm to a nationally ranked wrestling mat to a pioneering career in interventional radiology. What makes this scholarship different? • One simple essay – no lengthy forms, no letters of recommendation, no financial disclosure. • A prompt that asks you to think deeply – not about your GPA, but about who you are and who you want to become as a physician. • A connection to a living legacy – Dr. Banker personally reviews finalist essays and selects the winner. The $1,000 award can be used for tuition, fees, books, MCAT preparation, medical school application costs, or any other education related expense. The winner will also receive a certificate of achievement and (with permission) may have their essay excerpted on this website to inspire other pre med students.

Criteria

To be eligible for the Dr. Wade Banker Scholarship, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Enrollment – You must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate student (freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior) at an accredited college or university in the United States.
  2. Medical career path – You must be on a clear path toward medical school. This includes, but is not limited to: pre‑medicine, biology, chemistry, neuroscience, biomedical sciences, health sciences, or any major with required pre‑med coursework.
  3. Original work – Your essay must be written entirely by you and not previously published or submitted for another scholarship.
  4. One submission per student – Duplicate entries will be disqualified.
  5. Essay prompt (see below) – You must respond directly to the prompt. Off‑topic essays will not be considered.

Essay Prompt (Required)

Write an essay of 500–800 words responding to the following:

Dr. Wade Banker grew up on a small farm, earned a Division I wrestling scholarship, and later pioneered life‑saving medical programs – all while making time to mentor students, coach youth sports, and provide free care for veterans. Describe a specific challenge you have faced (academic, personal, or community‑based) that required the same kind of resilience, discipline, or service‑first mindset. How did that experience shape the kind of physician you intend to become?

What we are looking for:

  • A real, specific story – not a list of generic accomplishments.
  • Honest reflection on difficulty, not just triumph.
  • A clear connection between your experience and the values Dr. Banker embodies (resilience, work ethic, service, innovation, compassion).
  • Strong, clear writing that shows us how you think, not just what you’ve done.

What we are not looking for:

  • An academic research paper or a rehash of your resume.
  • AI‑generated essays or heavily templated responses.
  • Sympathy stories without personal growth or insight.

⚠️ Note: Your essay will be checked for originality. Plagiarism or AI‑generated content will result in immediate disqualification.
